Knee replacement

Mr. Goel is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the treatment of knees, including knee repair and total knee replacement in Wrexham, North Wales. Whether your knee pain is a result of a sporting injury, trauma or ageing, Ashok Goel can help you restore movement and reduce pain by diagnosing the problem and offering solutions that work for you.

A total knee replacement can replace an arthritic knee joint with artificial metal or plastic (highly cross-linked polyethylene) replacement parts. The procedure is normally recommended for older patients suffering from pain and loss of movement due to arthritis.

Uni-compartmental knee replacement

Also known as a ‘partial’ knee replacement is surgery where only a part of the knee is resurfaced. This is ideal for patients whose damage is limited to only one area of the knee. Thanks to smaller incisions during the unicompartmental knee replacement, patients will spend less time in hospital and be back to normal activities much sooner than total knee replacement patients.

Complex revision knee replacement

Technical errors, wear and tear, patients not feeling they have gained enough movement in the knee, or osteoarthritis advancing to other compartments of the knee after partial knee replacement may all result in a complex revision knee replacement. On these occasions the knee joint implant will be removed, and the surgery re-performed.

A revision procedure is much more complex than an initial knee replacement because your surgeon will remove the original implant. Revision surgery will therefore take longer to perform.

The latest technology

Mr. Goel will use in-depth MRI scanning to create a three-dimensional image of the knee to plan the knee replacement. This allows the manufacture of customised, patient specific instrumentation (PSI) to carry out the surgery.
