Synovitis

Overview

Synovitis is the inflammation of the synovial membrane, which is the inner lining of a joint. The Synovium normally produces a fluid which is useful for joint lubrication and helps in movements. However, the synovium may be inflamed due to several reasons and it causes excess fluid secretion and swelling of the joint. The synovitis is commonly seen in rheumatoid artiritis, gout, lupus and other conditions. It may also occur in Osteoarthiritis.

Symptoms

The Synovitis may cause pain, swelling, nodules, damage the articular cartilage, and reduced range of motion of the knee joint.

 

Investigations

Investigations include X-Rays, MRI Scan, ultrasound and blood tests to find out the cause of synovitis and management

 

Treatment

Treatment options include anti-inflammatory drugs such as NSAIDs, inter-articular injection of steroid. Specific treatments are based on the cause of Synovitis.
